FURRY PURSUIT: Modern Luxury, the regional magazine publisher, wanted its September issues to make a big, fat fashion statement. So when national fashion director, James Aguiar, attended the opening of “Queen of the Night” at Manhattan’s Diamond Horseshoe nightclub with his friends Linda Fargo and Giovanna Battaglia — the latter of whom happens to be creative director of the theater production — he knew he found his prime location for a fashion shoot. “I just kept thinking, ‘I need to get in here. I’m the one who has to do this shoot,’” he said. After cutting through some red tape, Aguiar landed the venue, pulling “over-the-top glamorous” dresses from designers like Roberto Cavalli, Emilio Pucci and Naeem Khan for the editorial. But he still needed a more masculine look — “a modernized Marlene Dietrich moment,” as he put it — so he phoned Hermès and asked to borrow a black astrakhan suit the brand sent down its fall 2014 runway, which happens to priced at $53,400 for the jacket and $46,000 for the trousers, topping out at a whopping $99,400. It was the first time the fashion house had ever lent the look — which was protected by armed guards — to a publication for photographic purposes.
“It was handled with kid gloves,” Aguiar said. “It was the first time I’ve have armed guards for ready-to-wear. I’m used to that with fine jewelry, but not with clothes.” The suit was modeled by Victoria Zuban, who stars in the spread alongside acrobats and performers from Broadway’s “Pippin.” The 12-page editorial will hit newsstands on Sept. 4, appearing in eleven of Modern Luxury’s titles, including Manhattan magazine, The Atlantan and Angeleno.
