NOT JUST BOURBON STREET: News magazines have thoroughly brought the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina's devastation on New Orleans to life, but W wanted to showcase the people who embody the lively spirit of the Big Easy in a 60-page photo essay for its April issue. Photographer Bruce Weber, along with stylist Karl Templer (who is said to be in talks to join Interview as creative director), shot supermodel Karen Elson and New Orleans' restaurateurs, musicians and otherwise colorful personalities that have rarely been featured in stories about the city. "Obviously, Katrina is and always will be a part of the history and future of New Orleans," said W creative director Dennis Freedman, of the shoot. "The point of the story is to show people who haven't been spotlighted in the media in the past." Among those shot were New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees; legendary former quarterback Archie Manning, father to the NFL's Eli and Peyton; chef Leah Chase, and students at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. "[Weber] is the photographer who best captures the humanity and personality and the heart and soul of a person," added Freedman. Weber seems to be a fan of Southern souls: the photographer also shot a portfolio of Mississippi for W in 1997. — Stephanie D. Smith

STEPPING UP: Tami Eagle Bowling has been upped to associate publisher of advertising at Marie Claire. She replaces David Stuckey, who left to join Teen Vogue as associate publisher. Bowling was advertising director at Marie Claire for three years and previously worked at Cosmopolitan and Esquire on the sales side. — S.D.S.

BIDDING ADIEU: Dominique Deroche, the longtime communications head for retired couturier Yves Saint Laurent and his partner, Pierre Bergé, is retiring this month. She joined YSL in 1966 and has been a member of the designer's inner circle ever since. More recently, she spearheaded public relations for the Pierre Bergé and Yves Saint Laurent Foundation in Paris. "It's a tough decision to leave after working with two exceptional personages," said Deroche, 63. "But it was time." — Robert Murphy

THERE IS GROWTH OUT THERE: It's not news that 2008 will be a tough year on the advertising front, but not everyone appears to be feeling the economic pinch. Growth has led People StyleWatch, a Time Inc. fashion and beauty title, to hire its first advertising director. Stacy Callahan comes to the magazine after more than five years at Marie Claire, where she served as executive fashion and retail director. Callahan will report to publisher Michelle Myers, who said more than 30 new advertisers, including American Express, L'Oréal and Ann Taylor, have signed on so far in 2008. Ad pages are up 28 percent through the May issue and the title sold, on average, 548,600 copies at the newsstand during the second half of 2007, according to a spokeswoman. People StyleWatch is published 10 times a year, with a rate base of 650,000. — Amy Wicks
