HONORING TINA AND JACK: Tina Brown hasn't worked in magazines since the folding of Talk in 2002, while Jack Kliger, chief executive of Hachette Filipacchi Media, has his elbows deep in them every day. Both were honored Wednesday for their respective careers with Lifetime Achievement Awards from the American Society of Magazine Editors and the Magazine Publishers of America. Brown was inducted into the Magazine Editors' Hall of Fame, and Kliger was handed this year's Henry Johnson Fisher Award (past winners include former Time Inc. chief Don Logan, Hearst Magazines president Cathie Black and Playboy founder Hugh Hefner). The two were given gushing praise by their peers over lunch at Gotham Hall, including a rap by Time Inc. chief executive homegirl Ann Moore to her "trusted pal" Kliger via video, a video greeting by S.I. Newhouse Jr. and an impassioned introduction of Brown by IAC/InterActiveCorp chief Barry Diller (who took time out from his latest street fight, this time with fellow mogul John Malone over control of IAC). Diller didn't floss over the Talk episode — nor did Brown, who also edited Tatler, Vanity Fair and The New Yorker. She summarized her magazine career as "three weddings and a funeral." Before the crowd could filter out of the ballroom, Kliger, a wine collector, had already picked out a bottle from his cellar to celebrate his award with his fiancée, Amy Griggs. NOW THEY'LL GET TO SIGN AUTOGRAPHS: Nina Garcia has practically become a household name, thanks to "Project Runway" and now, Elle colleagues Joe Zee and Anne Slowey may get their crack at TV stardom at last. The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday reported that Tyra Banks and Ken Mok of "America's Next Top Model" are a few of the producers behind a new reality series on the CW Network described as "The Devil Wears Prada"-meets-"The Assistant." And, while the story said the producers are negotiating with a "leading fashion magazine," there were no details about which title.
WWD has learned Zee and Slowey, who serve as creative director and fashion news director, respectively, are very close to completing a deal that would make them judges on the show — and opine about fashion with the same fanfare as their deskmate, Garcia. The ultimate prize for the contestants would be a job at Elle, working for Zee. The reality show doesn't have a name yet, but sources say the working title is "Fashionista." Calls to Zee and Slowey were not returned by press time. A spokesman at the CW said no deal has been finalized with any magazine editors. — Amy Wicks
RECYCLING AS AD REVENUE: New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Wednesday revealed plans to launch a campaign to increase residential recycling of magazines and catalogues. Beginning next week, full-page ads will begin appearing in consumer magazines, among other outlets, for ReMix (Recycling Magazines Is Excellent). Media placement in New York totals approximately $3 million. The national ReMix campaign was created by Time Inc., with partners Verso Paper and the National Recycling Coalition.
