ACROSS THE POND: Will budget cuts keep some fashion editors from making the trek to the European shows this week? Some have downgraded their hotels or shortened their trips as a way to save money, while others are dispatching the same amount of editors as in the past, but are splitting them up among London, Milan and Paris. Many editors — including Vogue’s Anna Wintour, Tonne Goodman and Mark Holgate; Glamour’s Cindi Leive; Elle’s Joe Zee; Harper’s Bazaar’s Glenda Bailey; In Style’s Ariel Foxman; Style.com’s Candy Pratts Price, and Marie Claire’s Joanna Coles — are making the trek to London this season since it marks the 25th anniversary of London Fashion Week, and Burberry, a big fashion magazine advertiser, will show its Prorsum collection there, as opposed to Milan, for the first time in eight years.
After London, some editors are going to Milan and Paris, while others will only visit one city or the other. Glamour, for example, is taking four editors for the European shows instead of five last season, and the group will divide duties between Milan and Paris. Wintour will go on to Milan and part of Paris, but Goodman, Holgate, Grace Coddington, André Leon Talley, Virginia Smith, Filipa Fino, Hamish Bowles and Sally Singer will be split between the two cities. In Style is bringing four staffers instead of six this year to Europe. At Interview, fashion market director Karla Martinez and editor at large Christopher Bollen are going to London, but editorial director Fabien Baron will be in Milan and Paris, and creative director Karl Templer will attend part of Milan and all of Paris. Elle, W and Harper’s Bazaar are bringing the same crews over as usual, as is Marie Claire, including fashion director Nina Garcia. “I have ordered everyone to cut down on expenses by eating as many of the free fried basil leaf bar snacks at the Four Seasons in Milan so they won’t need supper,” editor in chief Joanna Coles said in jest. — Stephanie D.
