MAGIC FOOD: David Blaine was at Bon Appétit’s fund-raiser for Sandy relief efforts last week at 4 Times Square. The magazine had organized an auction of reader-submitted Instagrams and convinced well-known New Yorkers — Rachel Roy, Lela Rose, Hannah Bronfman — to bid on images that had been initially collected for its new marketing campaign. Proceeds are to go to the Red Cross.
Blaine, famous for his TV specials as well as his wandering eye, showed up sleepy-eyed, unshaven, in the arms of a twentysomething waifish woman. The magician manqué paid his respects to Dan Kluger, the ABC Kitchen chef who cohosted with publisher Pamela Drucker Mann — Blaine’s a regular at the Union Square restaurant. He gobbled some finger food and agreed to one interview with another young woman, a New York magazine reporter. They talked and talked while Blaine’s companion sat ignored, playing with her phone. Finally, the interview ended, and Blaine, scooping up his original date, took off. He left without bidding on a single item. The starting bid for some of them was $75.
While all for a good cause, another main focus on Tuesday was Kluger.
Said Rose, “Feed me ABC Kitchen, and I don’t care what it is, I’m there. But yes, there’s an added bonus that I get to do my part, too.”
“I am here because I am such a huge supporter of Dan’s,” said Roy. “I’m a bit of a foodie. I’m also pretty much a sucker for anyone who has a heart and uses it for good.”
Roy’s hurricane experience was mild — she only lost power at her Chelsea apartment.
“The second I heard I could go back to my apartment, I got in the car and went to ABC and they were just getting back on their feet. I went there before I went home,” Roy said.
