LOVE ALL: While sticking to the sports world, Giorgio Armani is turning to a tennis champ for the first time for his new Emporio Armani Underwear and Armani Jeans campaigns. The designer has tapped Spanish ace Rafael Nadal Parera to front the brands’ spring/summer 2011 ads. Nadal, who succeeds Portuguese soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo and fellow footballer David Beckham before him, was photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. The black-and-white images will bow in February.

STAFFING UP: Now that WSJ. magazine editor Deborah Needleman is finished with her first issue, it’s time for a little hiring. “We did the magazine with very few people,” said Needleman in an interview in November. So she has hired Elle senior fashion news editor Whitney Vargas, who will be the fashion news director at WSJ. Nadia Vellam, who once was a photo editor for W and has been freelancing for WSJ. magazine, will become photo director. Fiona Murray, who has been fashion editor, will be promoted to features director. And Andrew Lutjens, who has been associate fashion editor, will be the market editor.

T: The New York Times Style Magazine has a staff of roughly 15 people, while WSJ. put out its first issue with five staffers. Needleman said in November that she wanted to find a deputy to help her put out WSJ. magazine since she splits her time between the magazine and the Off-Duty section for the Saturday edition of The Wall Street Journal.

“Ruth Altchek is the deputy editor that really runs [Off-Duty],” Needleman said previously. “My idea is to have someone eventually who does that for the magazine, too.”

For the moment, it appears that Murray, who will run day-to-day operations at the magazine, has that job.

The next issue of WSJ. magazine comes out in March.

OPEN HOUSE: Vogue Italia editor in chief Franca Sozzani will mark the launch of her book “I capricci della moda” (“The whims of fashion”) on Dec. 8 by opening the magazine’s editorial offices to her readers. “It’s another way to communicate with them,” said Sozzani. “I’ve realized that there are so many people who would like to share this experience, see how Vogue is put together and know more about fashion.”

Sozzani has invited guests such as Donatella Versace and Angela Missoni to participate in what she has dubbed the “Vogue Experience,” which will take place today to Sunday. Readers are able to sign up on the vogue.it site. “We’ve had 40 requests in 30 minutes, it’s hard to forecast how many people will want to participate,” said Sozzani.

The book is a collection of the editor’s posts from Vogue’s Web site and will also be on sale — and autographed — during the event. The blogs include such subjects as putting Vogue together, shopping addiction and photography, to name a few.

The editor has recently won some media attention for her crusade for diversity, including an extensive profile that appeared in the Washington Post last weekend on this subject. “I’m glad. We were criticized at the beginning, as people said we were restricting black or curvy women in a ghetto with our dedicated issues, but now they realize that we are offering everyone a chance to express themselves,” said Sozzani.
