LOOKING OUT WEST: Dawn Ostroff’s Condé Nast entertainment division is expanding to Hollywood. Ostroff, who said on her very first day last month as Condé Nast’s entertainment president that there are “a lot of movie and TV stars” at 4 Times Square, is opening a production office in Los Angeles. A Condé Nast insider told WWD that Ostroff is planning to hire a small handful of development people — aka D-girls — to plumb Condé’s titles for script ideas and to hit the town and pitch them.
A Condé Nast spokeswoman confirmed the entertainment division will open a Los Angeles office, but said that no one has been hired yet. Ostroff, who is based in New York, told WWD in October that she plans to initially hire about six to 10 people and expand from there.
Ostroff is trying to brainstorm a range of entertainment deals for the company — TV shows, reality shows, movies, documentaries, Web shorts, a digital channel — and she has been tasked to make sure each project improves the publisher’s bottom line. She told WWD that it was a “big problem” that Condé Nast didn’t see any financial gain from a movie like “The September Issue.”
She was formerly the head of the CW and UPN.
