WSJ., T Magazine Gearing Up for February Fashion Issues

LET THE GAMES BEGIN: WSJ. magazine and T: The New York Times Style magazine are gearing up to unveil their first fashion issues under new editors in February. There’s big pressure on both Kristina O’Neill and Deborah Needleman, and they are looking to make bold statements.

Needleman, formerly of WSJ., has had her creative team in place since early October. O’Neill is just getting started — she raided her old magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, for a features editor — and today appointed Magnus Berger as creative director. Berger comes with credibility in the magazine and fashion worlds already. The creative director of ad agency Berger & Wild, he founded The Last Magazine two years ago with Tenzin Wild. Several issues later, the magazine is a fixture during fashion week. WSJ. has had its sights on Berger for a while. Among many veterans of the industry, he had been one of the youngest guests at the magazine’s Innovator of the Year awards in October.

When T hired busy stylist Joe McKenna, it bestowed on him the title of fashion director at large presumably so he could hang on to his other jobs, namely consulting for fashion campaigns for the likes of Jil Sander. And Berger may be joining WSJ. as a staffer, but he is not giving up his other titles and will continue moonlighting at the magazine and the agency, whose clients, according to its Web site, include Givenchy, Hugo Boss and Lancôme.
