JUMPING SHIP: Maybe a year ago the media world would have been surprised to see the Sunday New York Times business editor leave the paper and head to The Huffington Post. But the announcement on Thursday that Tim O’Brien is going to work for Arianna Huffington felt a little like the latest trend. Voluntary departures — once unheard of at the Times — seem to be increasingly the norm these days.

“I have a deep attachment to the Times,” said O’Brien. “This was not a knee-jerk or easy decision to make.”

It probably hasn’t been easy for anyone, but in the last 10 days, five people have given notice at the Times: O’Brien quit on Thursday, David Shipley said the day before that he was heading off to Bloomberg, Dexter Filkins is leaving to go to The New Yorker, Ashlee Vance is going to Bloomberg BusinessWeek and Christine Muhlke has jumped ship to Bon Appétit. In September, Peter Goodman left the business section to go to The Huffington Post, and in July, tech correspondent and blogger Brad Stone said he was going to Bloomberg BusinessWeek.

That’s not exactly a breathtaking number of departures for a newsroom that has more than 1,000 people, but these aren’t entry-level reporters. The list consists of the op-ed editor (Shipley), a legendary war correspondent (Filkins), a Sunday business editor (O’Brien), a big-time economics writer (Goodman), The New York Times Magazine food editor (Muhlke) and two senior tech writers (Stone, Vance).

Is there suddenly a Times talent retention issue? The paper has been legendary in its ability to foster decadeslong careers for its top writers and editors. But if the last week or two is any indication, the notion of the star Times lifer is starting to look like a thing of the past. There is a caveat, of course: The Times has done a remarkable job of retaining talent in recent years, even as competitors such as The Washington Post have lost lots of big names (art critic Blake Gopnik and fashion writer Robin Givhan are the latest members of the Post’s Style section who are going to work for Tina Brown).

“We’ve had raids before, and every case is its own thing,” e-mailed Times executive editor Bill Keller.

But the Times has traditionally found ways to keep its stars at home. Now, Bloomberg is finding a way to outspend it by huge margins and even The Huffington Post can afford to pry away top Times talent.

“If there’s a theme to the recent departures, I think it’s that now the recruiters are less likely to be traditional competitors — WaPo, LAT, WSJ,” said Keller. “Now the big-money offers come from a newer competitive set — HuffPo, Bloomberg, etc. — that are suddenly investing in, pardon the expression, content. It may represent a recognition that aggregation isn’t everything.”

O’Brien said he would have been happy to stay at the Times for years.“I certainly didn’t doubt that I could have had a very fulfilling career here over the next 20 years,” he said. “I really believe the Times is a majestic and magical place. I have no doubt that they’re in the game for the long term. I really don’t think there’s an issue of people jumping out of here.”

Yet O’Brien did elect to leave. In his new job at The Huffington Post, he’ll oversee dozens of reporters and will generate enterprise pieces from the culture, political and business desks.

So why did he leave that magical kingdom on Eighth Avenue? “We’re all standing in the middle of this digital tsunami that’s washing across the journalism landscape,” he said. “There’s no question that some of the financial and organizational foundations of traditional journalism are going to change drastically. They already have.”

O’Brien said he was particularly impressed with The Huffington Post’s ability to engage with its readers. He’s excited about work for a Web-only destination, too. “This is where we live now,” he said.

SIMS CARD: Chloé’s creative director, Hannah MacGibbon, tapped a new photographer for the French brand’s spring campaign: David Sims. The images of models Iselin Steiro and Malgosia Bela — captured in a New York studio in MacGibbon’s sleek, clean-lined sportswear — are meant to convey grace, femininity and optimism. The campaign is slated to break in February titles — including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Elle — with an increased but unspecified investment on digital placements. Art direction for the campaign, mixing black-and-white and color photos, was by Petronio Associates.

MOVING ON UP: Burberry promoted Miles Freeland to director of public relations, overseeing all p.r. efforts for the brand in North America. Freeland was previously the men’s wear p.r. director for the Americas, having joined the U.S. team earlier this year from Burberry’s London headquarters, where he served as men’s wear p.r. manager. In his newly expanded role, Freeland is taking over some of the responsibilities from Jordan Daly, who exited the firm, and reports directly to vice president of marketing and communications George Kolasa.
