HONORS: Sheryl Sandberg, the chief operating officer of Facebook, has recently been criticized by some for preaching the gospel of the “Lean In” in her new book of the same title, which encourages women to stand up for themselves and buy into the notion it’s possible to balance both work and personal life. But she has a fan in Bonnie Fuller, the former editor of Us Weekly now at Jay Penske-owned Web site Hollywoodlife.com. At a talk Tuesday moderated by television personality Donny Deutsch for United Jewish Appeal Federation of New York Professional Women’s Philanthropy, Fuller gave the young women in the audience her tips for career advancement. “Choosing a husband is a career decision,” Fuller told WWD afterward. “It enables you to go forward with your own career if you have a supportive husband,” she said.

Fuller’s been married for more than 30 years. “In my situation, we did find at a certain point he had to become the more flexible one,” she said. Fuller said Sandberg’s taken some heat unfairly. “I think that women often have a confidence issue. They think they’re not as perfect as they should be at their current job and they’re afraid to raise their hand,” she said.

The former editor of Cosmopolitan and Glamour said it’s a feeling she’s experienced herself. “At times, I’ve absolutely had to push myself to have the confidence to ask for a promotion or a raise,” she said. Fuller was being honored as one of the organization’s Women of Influence. The other honorees were Elana Drell-Szyfer, chief executive officer of Ahava; “The Man Repeller” author Leandra Medine, and designer Charlotte Ronson.
