Hearst Magazines International Makes Digital Hire

Hearst has brought on Gary Ellis as its chief digital officer to oversee mobile and digital strategy for its international publications.

Hearst Magazines International said Thursday that it tapped Gary Ellis for the new position of chief digital officer.

Ellis, who comes to Hearst after an eight-year career as Viacom Media Networks’ vice president of international media, will be charged with the content, technology and overall business strategy for HMI’s global Web and mobile products.

While at Viacom, Ellis helped develop the mobile and digital platforms for MTV, VH1, Comedy Central and CMT. Recently, he also advised companies including Turner Broadcasting, The Economist, NewsCorp, ProSieben and Akado on digital and mobile growth initiatives.

Ellis, who will be based in New York, will start his new job on March 3 and will report to Duncan Edwards, president and chief executive officer of HMI.

“Gary is a forward-thinking, energetic leader with a proven track record of growing audience and revenue through innovative content, products and partnerships,” Edwards said. “He’s an expert at working across continents and cultures, and his talent and imagination will accelerate our digital initiatives around the world. We have a great opportunity to build a scalable business in digital on the strong foundations of our print businesses; many of our companies have already developed significant capabilities and Gary will ensure that our development speed increases.”
