FRAN SCAN: Fran Lebowitz turns up in the January issue of Watch, the bimonthly celebrity magazine owned by CBS. Normally, Watch covers the network’s stars, and Lebowitz, as of yet, is not employed by CBS, and doesn’t seem to be planning a guest-starring arc on “Mike & Molly.” She also isn’t talking about that planned HBO show. So, what’s she doing in there?
For Lebowitz, sounding quippy before reporters is like a part-time job. Earlier this year, she was on the cover of the new issue of Acne Paper magazine. For Watch, the interview is part of a new, beefed-up culture section. The magazine asked for her opinion on various aspects of American culture. Mark Zuckerberg, for instance, didn’t invent anything, Lebowitz said. “He reconfigured something. So did Martha Stewart, but she didn’t say, ‘I invented setting the table!’”
Lebowitz is not the only new appearance in the magazine. She is joined by Kate Betts, who will write a regular column.
After leaving Harper’s Bazaar, Betts returned to magazine editing for Time’s Style & Design supplement. But the magazine was suspended in 2009 over weak advertising — it came back this year as a biannual — and Betts dedicated herself to becoming a First Lady expert, writing a book on Michelle Obama. When CBS decided to add fashion stories to its magazine in September, Betts wrote a feature on Dior. The column, titled “Best Betts,” begins with the December issue.
