FLESH TO IMPRESS: New mothers — and fathers — look away now. Gisele Bündchen is back on the cover of Vogue — the June issue of Brazilian Vogue — just a few months after giving birth to her second child, a daughter named Vivian, in December.
Taking its cue from the human form, the issue, which hits newsstands on Wednesday, also features Pamela Anderson, Brazilian actors Débora Nascimento and José Loreto and footballer Alexandre Pato, shot by Mario Testino.
“He knows the Brazilian woman so well,” said Daniela Falcão, the editor of Vogue Brazil, referring to Testino. What began “only” as a cover and fashion editorial to celebrate Bündchen’s comeback after the birth of her daughter Vivian turned out as a whole Body Special Issue.
“Mario got so excited with Gisele’s shape, and how she looked amazing two months after giving birth, that he proposed to do eight more editorials on the theme, each very different from the other, discussing subjects from gender identity to the right to use your body as you wish,” she added.
Testino has also shot the tanned and buff figures of models Andrej Pejic, Casey Legler, Joan Smalls and Doutzen Kroes. He worked on location and in studios in Los Angeles, New York and Argentina.
“In Brazil, body image is very relevant since people have a big concern with the shape, whether being dressed or naked. It’s such a part of the culture — like in Rio, where the beach meets the city and people go to the beach after work and on weekends.” Testino said.
A spokesman for Testino said the photographer carried on his tradition of collaborating with artists for an additional feature in the June issue. Artists including Cecily Brown, Nate Lowman, Jenny Saville and Mickalene Thomas have taken Testino’s images and reworked them in their own style, all focused on the theme of the human body.
