FEMALE POWER: The Hollywood Reporter’s 22nd annual Women in Entertainment breakfast at The Beverly Hills Hotel on Wednesday honored the magazine’s Power 100 list, topped by Anne Sweeney, cochairman of Disney Media Networks and president of ABC/Disney Television Group. “I’m looking around this sea of perfect blowouts and you know who I feel bad for? The 101st most powerful woman,” said emcee Jimmy Kimmel.
Adding to the glam factor were actresses Jane Fonda, Ahna O’Reilly, Angie Harmon, Allison Williams, Diane Lane, Judy Greer and Melissa Leo. The event honored Oprah Winfrey with the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award. “Kanye, don’t you even think about taking this award from Oprah,” Kimmel said to Kanye West, who accompanied Kim Kardashian to the event.
Presenting the award to Winfrey, her friend Maria Shriver wrote a poem called “Becoming” in lieu of a speech. “Be easy on me; it’s not Maya Angelou — that’s who normally writes poems for Oprah,” said Shriver. But Winfrey was nonetheless moved, saying, “That beats a eulogy, I gotta tell you. And you’re alive to hear it? Amazing.”
Winfrey urged the crowd to use their positions in the industry to mentor young women. “The real privilege is getting to use who you are to elevate the higher good of everyone else. That is the true purpose of leadership. How you do it? That should be your greatest joy.”
