Entertainment Weekly Taps Matt Bean

Bean joins EW from SportsIllustrated.com where he served as managing editor since 2012.

Entertainment Weekly has found itself a new digital savvy editor.

The magazine has tapped Matt Bean, who joins EW from SportsIllustrated.com where he served as managing editor since 2012.

Bean will report to Jess Cagle. Last month, Cagle, the former EW editor, was promoted to editorial director and editor of People, Time Inc.'s cash cow.

Bean’s addition to the EW staff is an interesting one, as the editor has spent the majority of his career in the digital world. While it may support speculation by industry sources that EW may eventually go all-digital, it surely indicates the importance of the Web for EW increasing its standing among celebrity-focused news pubs and blogs.

“Matt’s arrival is a testament to Time Inc.’s confidence in EW,” offered Cagle. “He is a uniquely talented editor well-suited to this unique brand, and it will be a thrill to see where he and the extraordinary staff take EW in the years to come.”

Before SI.com, Bean had spent eight years as an editor and digital executive at Rodale. More specifically, he had worked as articles editor of Men’s Health where he launched more than 30 mobile apps and a tablet edition for the  magazine. He also served as Rodale’s vice president of digital production development, focusing on the company’s other publications, such as Men’s Health, Runner’s World and Women’s Health.
