EDITOR’S PICK: They may not be known for their sports savvy, but Super Bowl mania is rampant and editors want you to know what they think anyway. “I watch entirely too much football,” said Bon Appétit editor in chief Adam Rapoport, who admitted the fact that his team, the Redskins, weren’t even coming close to playing well.
“So, I’m rooting for the Seahawks because they have the coolest helmets in the NFL. They are part matte and part Day-Glo,” he said, while also admitting to being highly entertained by Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, whom he dubbed the “Kanye West of the NFL.”
The editor delved into his passion for food for a second before making a detour back to football. “No disrespect to Thanksgiving, but the Super Bowl is the greatest eating holiday of the year,” Rapoport said, adding that he’d be hanging with friends in Red Hook, feasting over homemade Mexican food. (He’s making a queso dip.)
“While I’m rooting for the Seahawks’ helmet, I’d be happy for Peyton Manning to win another Super Bowl. It would help burnish his résumé significantly,” Rapoport said.

A perhaps truer Manning fan, Jerry Tarde, chairman and editor in chief of Golf Digest, offered: “Broncos. When in doubt, go with the golfer. Peyton Manning has shot 77 at Augusta National, made two holes-in-one and played in pro-ams with Tiger [Woods]. So I think he knows how to deal with pressure.”
Another sports-centric editor in chief, Lucy Danziger of Self, said she was going with who she knows — sort of. “As a Giants fan, gotta root for Manning, even if it’s not the New York brother. Also, orange is my lucky color.”
Agreeing was another Lucy, this one from Hearst’s O, The Oprah Magazine. “Since I can’t root for the Giants, I’m going with the other Manning,” said O editor in chief Lucy Kaylin. “I don’t like betting against Marshawn Lynch, but I do believe Peyton will find a way to win. And, per custom, we’ll be watching with friends, enjoying iffy nachos and first-rate margaritas.”
Over at Time Inc., Real Simple managing editor Kristin van Ogtrop said, “I’m personally rooting for the Seahawks because I’m obsessed with Richard Sherman, and not just because he used the word ‘oxymoron’ in a press conference last week.”
Fellow Time Inc. editor Richard Story of Departures fittingly took a loftier stance. “Alas, I will be in the D.R. [Dominican Republic] Sunday evening, but if truth be told, Super Bowl for a luxury editor probably has more to do with something by new Paris-based designer Hervé van der Straeten.”
As for the other fashion-inspired Time Inc. magazine, InStyle, editor Ariel Foxman declined to comment. “Ariel is not a football fan,” an InStyle spokeswoman said.
