DIGITALLY 20: When Wired published its May 2011 issue for free on the iPad it was downloaded more than 200,000 times. Editors are betting that figure will be beat when its inaugural issue, originally published back in January 1993, is released for free Friday on the device. The iPad version has been upgraded page for page and includes stories of Wired’s start in Amsterdam (Millennium was the working title). It also features a 12,000-word oral history from the original team behind the magazine, including founding editors Louis Rossetto and Jane Metcalfe, who sold the magazine to Condé Nast in 1998.
“We knew we wanted to revisit the first issue for our 20th anniversary and, thanks to Adobe, we were able to make that happen,” said publisher Howard Mittman. “The only thing more exciting than looking back at that issue and seeing how relevant it is today is being able to share it with the Wired community.”
