Why is David Copperfield’s name on the list of attendees for Monday evening’s annual National Magazine Awards? Is he planning a magic trick that will make David Remnick disappear? No, it appears the magician, best known in fashion circles as the former boyfriend of model Claudia Schiffer, will be a guest of Departures editor in chief Richard David Story.
In a press release for the event, the list of “confirmed attendees” also includes rugby player Gareth Thomas, who will sit with Terry McDonell and Sports Illustrated (SI did a profile on him last year). Oprah’s best friend Gayle King will be there, along with “The Biggest Loser” trainer Jillian Michaels, Mehmet Oz and chef Rocco DiSpirito. Katie Couric is hosting.
The celebrity-heavy lineup sounds more like a week on the “Today” show than the usual crowd, perhaps signaling that the media world wants the media world to start covering the media world’s awards just as much as they do the TV Land Awards.
