CONDE CHANGES ROLL ON: Call it the September surprise. As first reported on WWD.com, Condé Nast completed the second half of its shake-up Friday: Chris Mitchell was named the new publisher of GQ, while Carolyn Kremins succeeded him at Condé Nast Traveler. Mitchell, formerly a publisher at Details and Wired, called it a “long-term career goal” to land at GQ.
GQ had an inconsistent first half and was down 3 percent in ad pages during that time, while rival Esquire was up 12.7 percent, according to the Publishers Information Bureau. It was seen as inevitable that Mitchell, who was (unsuccessfully) recruited by Hearst president David Carey in the spring, was bound to land at a bigger book at some point.
Meanwhile, Kremins, formerly a publisher at Cookie before she joined Brides, got bumped up to a bigger title in Condé Nast Traveler, which is up 2 percent in ad pages in the first half. Michelle Myers, who oversaw a 6 percent drop in ad pages in the first half at Lucky, has been pushed over to Brides. Myers was succeeded by GQ’s number two Marcy Bloom, who will get her first crack as a publisher as she, along with editor Brandon Holley, attempt to revive the monthly.
Pete Hunsinger, the publisher at GQ since 2003, will take over the golf books, a part of the company that Condé Nast executives feel is underperforming, sources said. Golf Digest and Golf World were down in the first half of the year by 1 percent and 5 percent, respectively. Golf Magazine, owned by Time Inc., was up 7.8 percent in the first half.
As WWD first reported, Condé Nast confirmed Friday that Brides Local magazines will fold, and that its fall and winter issue currently on newsstands will be their last.
