COLES’ TV MOMENT: It’s been four years since a magazine editor got a broadcast television profile. Anna Wintour, the editor in chief of Vogue, was interviewed on “60 Minutes” in 2009 to promote the documentary “The September Issue.” Joanna Coles, the relatively new editor in chief of Cosmopolitan, gets the same treatment on Friday, when a profile by Harry Smith appears on NBC’s magazine show, “Rock Center,” in one of its last shows before it’s off the air in a month.
NBC filmed the segment over four months, starting in January and spilling into the beginning of May, a period of time that covered fashion week and the unveiling of the magazine’s important March cover, which featured the singer Miley Cyrus.
In the segment, viewers will learn that Coles, who’s been at Cosmo since September, enjoys Fleetwood Mac and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Smith gives the new editor credit for embracing weightier topics in new features, like March’s ad page-fluffing pullout, Cosmo Careers, featuring Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg. “I think it’s really important Cosmo is a place where we can talk about serious issues that affect young women,” Coles said.
