BOOK BEAT: It was a homecoming for the hipster set at Milk Gallery on Wednesday evening, as a steady stream of girls in fur-trimmed parkas and short shorts made their way back to the space for the first time this year for the typical draw of free vodka and photography. Aaron Stern — perhaps better known to this group as an event producer for fashion labels and music venues — was showing photographs that he took at rock shows during the past six years. The whole collection is featured in his new book, “Everyone Must Be Announced,” from Shipley & Halmos.
Stern welcomed friends such as Alexa Chung, who asked him to shoot her from various angles near her post at the DJ booth. She was getting ready to play some music and showed off one of her favorite party tricks: pretending to walk downstairs from behind the booth and disappear. Andrew Wyatt, of the band Miike Snow, was also behind the booth, eating salmon from chopsticks, while the rest of the crowd flocked to the 15 boxes of pizza that Stern ordered. Penn Badgley, who unbuttoned his shirt far enough to display ample chest hair, took photos with Zoe Kravitz, putting their recent breakup rumors to rest. Those who missed the festivities needn’t worry: There will be plenty more to come, perhaps as soon as next week, when photographer Cliff Watts’ exhibition begins on Tuesday.
