ARCHIVAL LOOKS: Some designers — such as Yves Saint Laurent — have remarkable, very complete archives of their work. Others don’t. For those who’d like to create or organize their archives, Julie Ann Orsini of The Wardrobe offers that service, and, in that capacity has been a consultant to Tom Ford and Jason Wu.
“I help fashion companies that need to have a huge archive on hand, or advise private clients what’s really valuable to keep,” she says. “I think of it terms of really curating artists. Fashion designers and artists like Alexander McQueen too often fail to treat their work as art, because it’s meant to be worn.”
Orsini, who was a founding member of the publication Life & Style, studied journalism at NYU and got a master’s degree at FIT in their special museum course. While there, she was a curator for “Sole Desire: The Shoes of Christian Louboutin” at the Museum at FIT, and she later helped catalogue Stephen Sprouse’s archives for “Stephen Sprouse: Rock on Mars” at the Deitch Projects. She says the advantage of working with The Wardrobe is that they can provide and execute a “seamless and organized” plan. “When I went in to meet [Wu], he said it was nice to meet someone who had the same respect for clothing that they did and wouldn’t just put it in an art-storage facility,” she adds.
