HOME BOYS: The creators of independent fashion magazine Achtung may no longer be based in Berlin, but the capital city remains at the heart of this edgy title. That’s especially the case for issue 19, which hits the newsstands Sept. 13 and for the first time in Achtung's eight-year history, is completely dedicated to Berlin.
The focus is Kreuzberg: A multi-cultural neighborhood that's home to anarchists, assorted artists, artisans and Achtung cover boys Kasim, Burchan and Hamid, members of Kreuzberg's large Turkish population. “I've wanted to do a story on young Turks for years now,” said Achtung founder Markus Ebner, who sent Gillian Wiechert out for two days of street castings.
They posed for photographer Walter Pfeiffer in designer duds from the likes of Lanvin, Givenchy, Bottega Veneta, Yves Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton, Dior Homme and Prada, combined with Nike Sportswear. “If you look at men's fashion these days, especially Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy,” Ebner commented, “the streetwear inspiration may be avant-garde wonderland in Paris. But it's been urban reality here for a long time.” For those whose Berlin tastes run more in the Helmut Newton vein, there's a second cover shot by Sabrina Theissen.
It stars Berlin model Jana Drews, wearing nothing but her Escada trousers among the foliage of Humboldthain park.
