A GOWN AND A GIRDLE: The Time 100 list is a little light in the fashion department this year. Only two names made the cut: Sarah Burton from Alexander McQueen and Sara Blakely from Spanx. “The comic irony of Spanx is that the woman who became a billionaire after inventing them doesn’t even need them. Poor thing, she was a size 2 when the idea hit her,” said Katie Couric, in her blurb about Blakely. Incidentally, Blakely has had a big year in the press. In addition to monthly news coverage in fashion titles, she was recently on the cover of Forbes as a “self-made billionaire” (although innerwear industry executives dispute that description), and The New Yorker wrote about how she rehabilitated the modern girdle.
Sarah Jessica Parker wrote about Burton, who made Kate Middleton’s royal wedding a reality for everyone. “A royal wedding dress that could never live up to the impossible dream. But it did,” Parker wrote.
The annual Time 100 Gala will take place at Jazz at Lincoln Center on Tuesday. Rihanna will perform and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will deliver the keynote address. Time will roll out three red carpets for the 350 attendees, who are expected to include Chelsea Handler, Jeremy Lin, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Claire Danes, Matt Lauer, Tilda Swinton and Harvey Weinstein.
