A DAY IN THE LIFE? Next week’s issue of French Elle, due on newsstands Friday, promises to show Karl Lagerfeld like you’ve never seen him before. To wit: There he is, eyeing up the stain removers in the laundry aisle, exasperated behind the wheel in a traffic jam or poring over the daily French sports newspaper, L’Equipe.
It’s all staged: A turn-the-tables ruse as the couturier launches his masstige clothing line Karl. In the background of the whimsical eight-page feature, models Saskia de Brauw and Caroline Brasch Nielsen can be seen wearing Lagerfeld’s graphic, rock-influenced togs as he goes about his fictional daily business.
In the accompanying interview, Lagerfeld marvels at the selection of junk food at grocers: “It’s the first time I’ve stepped into a supermarket. It’s crazy — fascinating what one can buy. There’s enough here to easily gain 20 kilos.” He also makes clear the world is better off he’s a chauffeur-driven kind of guy. “I haven’t driven since I was 18,” he recounts, “and that’s a benefit to society because I ended up in a ditch, without knowing why!”
