Up-and-coming designers have a new place to call home. SocialAttire.com, billed as an interactive social community that marries crowdsourcing and e-commerce, aims to give aspiring designers the opportunity to see their designs for sale.

“Essentially, the idea of the Web site is to expose designers to the competitiveness of the industry,” said founder Allison Dwyer. “It’s hard for them to get noticed, and especially tough to get mass produced.”

The site works as follows: designers create a personalized profile, send in samples or sketches of a dress (because “not all designers are at the point of having samples, so we also have a sketch competition,” said Dwyer) which is then posted for the site’s 3,500 plus members to view. Over a period of two weeks, members cast their votes on a favorite look, and the winning look is produced by local New York manufacturers and sold on SocialAttire.

“It is a great way for these  young designers to get their label out there and get exposed with really no risk for them at all,” added Dwyer.

In its first seven months, SocialAttire has produced nine styles from different designers, and received thousands of submissions from all over the world — including Dubai and China.

In the coming months, SocialAttire plans to add a separates competition, and eventually introduce accessories as a submission category.
