Every year, London's Serpentine Gallery throws its annual outdoor summer gala, and every year guests try to figure out what the heck the year's enormous installation is supposed to be.

"It reminds me of the giant mushroom that sprung up in my garden after the rain" said Stephen Webster, gazing at the huge, umbrella-like sculpture by Zaha Hadid.

"I really don't understand architecture" admitted Damien Hirst. "But I definitely prefer this one to Rem Koolhaas' design last year."

One benefit of Hadid's project, however, was the shade it provided as guests including Pierce Brosnan, Natalia Vodianova, Rod Stewart, Geri Halliwell, Thandie Newton, Hussein Chalayan, Bianca and Jade Jagger, Anouck Lepère and Liberty Ross danced on the lawn to Eighties hits.

But Katie Grand still stood confused. "It looks like it's made out of tights" she marveled. "Don't get me wrong, I like tights." Giles Deacon said he felt as if he'd wandered into a mid-summer tribal gathering.

In fact, that's a fairly suitable description of the Proenza Schouler party in Los Angeles the same night, where the designers' loyal and famous following including Ryan Gosling, Joaquin Phoenix and Kate Bosworth gathered at Mark and Brigette Romanek's home in Los Feliz.

Fresh from selling a stake in their business to Valentino, Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough were in town for a Nordstrom event at the Pacific Design Center and a little merriment. So, Amanda Demme corralled the bold-faced troops.

"It's nice to have a little fun when you have to come out for work" said McCollough. "I would love to move out of New York, actually. I'm a nature boy."

While China Chow, Jacqui Getty, Jenni Kayne and Kelly Lynch relaxed alfresco, Jeremy Scott was on a self-guided tour of the Romaneks' new abode. "The house is so gorgeous" he said. "Have you seen the pool? It's like heaven — you just want to dive right in."
