Those who went to the benefit for the Amaryllis Farm Equine Rescue at Steven Klein’s Bridgehampton house on Saturday night in hopes of seeing “honorary chairperson” Madonna would have been disappointed. The closest thing to the pop icon was a massive screen showing the video of her 2006 W magazine photo shoot, in which she primped and posed as a Dietrich-esque equestrian/dominatrix. And there was a drag queen walking around in the same costume, which was a little surreal — a pastiche of a pastiche.

Meanwhile, the hosts in attendance — Gwyneth Paltrow and the photographer himself — were huddled away from the hoi polloi until they came out to the stables on Klein’s property to introduce the evening’s showstopper, a rehabilitated horse named Maximilian who pranced around like a ballerina to a Madonna song from “Evita.”

Afterward, Paltrow and others headed to a party at L.A. Reid’s Sagaponack pad for Mariah Carey and her new husband, Nick Cannon. For those who have been living under a rock, Mimi’s emancipation ended in June when she married Cannon, a 27-year-old rapper and actor whom she’d been dating briefly. Napkins at the party said “Summer of Love” and though some have wondered whether the marriage would last longer than that, the couple’s behavior on the dance floor suggested the relationship is still going very strong. “They were all over each other,” said one guest. “It was really cute.”

Seen gadding about were LL Cool J, Samuel L. Jackson, Gayle King, Kelly Ripa and Star Jones, who arrived with what appeared to be a date. As another partygoer noted, “He looked kind of like Al Reynolds.”
