The statues, sarcophagi, urns and amphorae that crowd the new Greek and Roman Galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art might be ancient, but the revelry that took place there Wednesday night was nearly Dionysian. The Bulgari family hosted a dinner to celebrate the reopening of its refurbished Manhattan store, drawing Emily Mortimer, Victoria Traina and Fabiola Beracasa. Meanwhile, her mother, Veronica Hearst, as well as Lee Radziwill and Gina Lollobrigida, gave the younger set a run for its money.
"Don't crush me on your way in, everyone," joked the museum's director, Philippe de Montebello, as he welcomed the guests for a tour of the galleries before dinner.
Nearby, a well-heeled and almost exclusively Spanish-speaking crowd convened at Carolina Herrera's Madison Avenue boutique to preview and purchase designer masks created for the upcoming El Museo del Barrio gala. "I love everything Latin. The food, the dance, everything," Herrera said, leaning back and flourishing her arm as if she were to punctuate the thought with a grand "Olé!"
Three thousand miles away, the L.A. set gathered at the new Oscar de la Renta store on Melrose Avenue for its opening party. A cold kept the designer himself from attending, but his absence didn't stop guests — including co-host Jennifer Garner, Cindy Crawford, Betsy Bloomingdale, Amber Valletta, Camilla Belle, Lisa Kudrow, Ione Skye and Amanda Peet — from throwing on their party dresses and joining in the festivities. "Believe me, nobody is more sad than Oscar that he's not here because he loves a good party," said Alex Bolen, eyeing the crowd of lovelies dressed up in the designer's frocks.
"I love Oscar's clothes," said Garner. "They are classy yet still young and hip. You never lose the woman in the dress."
Thursday afternoon, back in New York, Amy Cappellazzo, Lydia Fenet and Nathalie Kaplan hosted a lunch at Christie's to celebrate its postwar and contemporary sale, and the Armani Privé spring collection. Ladies such as Tory Burch, Heather Mnuchin, Olivia Chantecaille and Marjorie Gubelmann dutifully filed into the auction house and table talk quickly turned to motherhood and commiseration over the party-heavy week,
