Oscar de la Renta

SHORE THING: A shimmering Lake Tahoe and towering Sierras provided an entrancing backdrop on Saturday for The League to Save Lake Tahoe's annual benefit, sponsored by Saks Fifth Avenue. A record 600 guests flooded in from across the state for an Oscar de la Renta runway presentation and trunk show at the Fritz family's lakefront manse.

"I'm so happy to be here in the most beautiful setting in the world," said the designer, receiving a standing ovation just before the show. "I look forward to coming all year." Indeed, this was de la Renta's seventh time presenting his collection at the affair, succeeding Bill Blass, who participated for several decades.

Google vice president Marissa Mayer jetted in with friends for the occasion, and during the auction, made the winning $60,000 bid for a couture gown and lunch with de la Renta at his New York atelier. At the end of the afternoon, Dede Wilsey, Rosemary Baker, Jean Larette, Therese Post, Sally Debenham and Diane Chapman rushed the tent where a trunk show had been set up and duked it out over the frilly and feminine frocks. In all, the event raised more than $600,000 for the environmental charity.
