Between the financial climate, soaring unemployment rates and housing woes, there are certainly enough reasons for even the most cheerful ladies to become Debbie Downers. Perhaps that could explain the recent spate of celebrities and socials opting for various shades of blue for everything from store cocktails to red carpet affairs. Anne Hathaway and Debbie Bancroft evoked its regal side, in deep, purple-inflected tones and long, columnar silhouettes at a film festival premiere and New York City gala, respectively. Meanwhile, Cynthia Rowley and Marisa Tomei chose brighter shades for a duo of movie screenings (Tomei actually wore the color three times during her rounds for “The Wrestler”). The hue has a more serious side, too: Marina Rust and Julianne Moore opted for navy rather than the more expected black for Manhattan nights out. But even a deep midnight need not read somber. Witness Emma Watson’s party-ready minifrock, complete with a sheer neckline and arms, sculpted bustier and asymmetrical bubble skirt. Who’s got the blues now?
