The AIDS Community Research Initiative of America summer benefit at Steven Klein’s Bridgehampton, N.Y., home was a little like the lensman’s photographs: technically flawless and chockablock with beautiful people, all of whom could use more food.

Calvin Klein Collection and Vanity Fair sponsored the al fresco bash, which took place on the photographer’s vast estate from 8 to 11 p.m. — the time of night when guests such as Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick, Lee Pace, Rachel Zoe, Ross Bleckner, Daphne Guinness and Jane Holzer are usually eating dinner. Of course, some attendees may have chosen to hit the party thinking there would be dinner, but they were met with little more than appetizer portions of grilled cheese, sliders and potato chips.

“I didn’t have anything to do with it,” said Klein, defending his ability as host. “I had ideas but they nixed them.”

Nevertheless, partygoers found other ways to occupy themselves. “I’m going to claw my way through 35 really buff guys to get to the bar,” said Euan Rellie, who arrived with his wife, Lucy.

The couple hosted their own brunch shindig the next day at the Surf Lodge in Montauk. Guests such as Olivia Chantecaille, Bronson Van Wyck and Helen and Tim Schifter feasted on lobster rolls, seafood scrambles and Bloody Marys while congratulating Gucci Westman, who’s due with her and husband David Neville’s second child on Aug. 14.
