Vans Vault fall 13

Taka Hayashi is drawing up something new for Vans. The graphic designer, illustrator and skater is a regular collaborator for the brand’s premium shoe collection, Vans Vault. During Vault’s 10th anniversary year, Hayashi reminisced about his first experience working on the line: “We started with a classic silhouette and added high-end, luxury textiles like calfskin and pony hair. From there, it slowly evolved to tweaking the patterns and doing something different.” For future collections, the designer said he plans to stick with Vault’s signature looks. “We’ll always stay true to the heritage and blend our DNA with something relevant,” he said. Here, Hayashi shares his views on the evolution of the skate culture and his music of choice.

Art tool I can’t live without:
“My charcoal pencil. I use it for everything, whether it’s sketching or drawing to start my paintings. It’s a basic tool I carry all the time”

Biggest change in skate over the past 10 years:
“It’s definitely gotten more commercialized. It used to be more of an underground thing and now it’s more mainstream. There’s good and bad to that.”

Best tunes for designing:
“I’ve been listening to a lot of the old stuff, like 1970s jazz.”

My intro to shoes:
“One of my first shoe experiences was going to the Vans store, looking through the swatch books and customizing my own Sk8-His. It’s funny that I do almost the same thing now.”

Favorite place for Mexican food:
“It’s in San Francisco, [a restaurant] called Pancho Villa in the Mission District. I really like the burritos.”
