Obit: Earth Brands Founder Michel Meynard

Industry veteran was a designer and entrepreneur.

Michel Meynard, founder of Meynard Designs and Earth Brands, based in Waltham, Mass., died on Sept. 21. He was 73.

Meynard emigrated from France to the U.S. in 1965 and began selling machinery to shoe factories in New England. After six months, he landed a job at a local shoe factory and was sent to oversee production in Brazil. In 1970, Meynard went into business for himself, launching Michel Meynard, a private-label shoe firm that continues to operate under the name Meynard Designs.

In 2002, Meynard acquired the rights to the Earth footwear label and formed the firm Earth Brands to produce and distribute the iconic line. 

Meynard’s son, Philippe Meynard, who owns, will now add the role of chairman of Earth Brands to his duties.

In addition to his son, Meynard is survived by his wife, Arlette, daughter-in-law Lee and two grandchildren.

A celebration of life ceremony will take place on Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, Mass.
