Figure skater Max Aaron grew up on the ice. Born in Scottsdale, Ariz., the 21-year-old started playing hockey at 4 and added figure skating to the mix to improve his game when he was 9. But after breaking his back and spending four months in a body cast at 16, Aaron decided to focus on skating. His inspiration, he said, was seeing athletes Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin of the gymnastics team take gold in the Summer Olympics. Known for his athleticism and jumping prowess, Aaron took third at the U.S. National Championships last week in Boston, narrowly missing a spot on the two-man Olympic team. He will next represent the U.S. in the world championships in Saitama, Japan, in March.

Off-ice footwear of choice:
“Magnanni’s double monk strap. That’s my go-to.”

Guilty pleasure:
Reality TV. “I enjoy it when I finally get the time. My new one is ‘Total Divas.’ I got hooked.”

Secret aspiration:
“I always wanted to be a businessman in real estate. I wanted to be on ‘Million Dollar Listing,’ wear a different suit every day and then every month get another seven suits.”

Hidden talent:
“I make a mean steak — seasoning it and grilling it up. I enjoy cooking. I haven’t really cooked yet for a girlfriend. I’m working on it. I’ve been really busy!”

Hockey idol:
Sergei Fedorov. “He’s an amazing player. He wore these black-and-white skates. To this day, I still want a pair.”
