At just 12 years old, classical singer Jackie Evancho has already performed with some of music’s biggest names, including Barbra Streisand, Sarah Brightman and Tony Bennett. Evancho shot to fame two years ago when she competed on “America’s Got Talent,” stunning viewers with her soaring operatic voice. Since then, the Pittsburgh native, who has been dubbed a musical prodigy, has released several chart-topping albums and toured the world.
When it comes to her wardrobe, Evancho looks for more classic clothing and shoes to complement the elegant venues in which she performs, such as New York’s Lincoln Center and the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles.
“Because most of the songs I sing are timeless, I feel it’s important to wear timeless outfits to tie [everything] together. And nothing says timeless like the beautiful, long dresses and glittery shoes I wear on stage,” she said.
To put the finishing touch on her glamorous ensembles, Evancho often turns to footwear brands Stuart Weitzman and Nina. But finding sophisticated yet age-appropriate shoes in her size isn’t always easy, she said. With the help of her stylist, New York-based Fifi Bell, the chanteuse sometimes works with labels to create custom looks.
Now her budding career is taking her in new directions. This fall, she will be featured as the face of the Guess Kids ad campaign and star in the Robert Redford-directed film “The Company You Keep,” giving her a chance to experiment with more casual fashions. “I’ve gotten loads of clothing from Guess, so I’m wearing a lot of cute denim dresses and jeans right now,” she said. “It’s fun to mix it up.”
Here, the singing sensation talks about her favorite places to shop and finding that perfect pair for a big performance.
Pairs owned: “I’d say about 25 pairs, between my performance shoes, my everyday shoes [and] all the shoes my stylist has [for me]. I’m a kid, so I grow out of my shoes fast.”
Favorite brands: Kors Michael Kors, Stuart Weitzman, Jessica Simpson, Sperry Top-Sider, Converse, Kenneth Cole Reaction, Nike, Skechers
Personal style: “Fun, young and hip.”
Go-to brands for performances: “I normally wear Stuart Weitzman or Kors Michael Kors. Lately, though, I’ve been wearing Nina, [which] comes in all different colors to match my colorful dresses.”
All-time favorite performance look: “I have so many. One is this yellow-and-lavender floral dress by Belle of the Ball that I wore on PBS’ ‘Great Performances.’ It was a ball gown, and I [paired it with] gold shoes by J. Reneé. Another [standout] is a blue dress that was custom made for me by Guess. I wore it with clear shoes — also by J. Reneé — that made me feel just like Cinderella.”
How challenging is it to find classic styles for your performances? “It’s not that easy. I have to get a lot of things custom made. I’m lucky to have a great stylist who shops around and finds stuff that works well.”
Heels or no heels? “My parents are OK with me wearing a small heel, up to 1.5 inches high. Heels give me height when I wear such long dresses. For me, they complete the outfit.”
Typical casual look: “Usually jeans, a cute T-shirt and fun sandals.”
Shopping haunts: “I love to shop at Macy’s. It has a huge Guess section and lots of Jessica Simpson stuff. I also really like Gap, and my stylist, Fifi, [and I] find some amazing things at Neiman Marcus.”
Best cities for shopping: “Definitely New York and Tokyo. They have absolutely everything.”
Celebrity fashion idol: “I love Lady Gaga. She’s not afraid to take risks and be herself.”
Shoe trend of the moment: “I’m loving wedges right now.”
