Hailed for his role in using sport to “bring the world together,” Adidas CEO Herbert Hainer received the Global Leadership Award from the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies at Johns Hopkins University on Tuesday night in Manhattan.

Hainer, who has held the CEO position at the Herzogenaurach, Germany-based sporting goods firm since 2001, praised his executive team for making possible the brand’s strong 2011 performance, marked by record sales of 10.1 billion euros through the third quarter, up 13 percent on a currency-neutral basis.

Supporting Hainer at the event were Uli Becker, president of Reebok; Patrik Nilsson, president of Adidas America; Michael Rupp, president of Rockport; and Mark King, president and CEO of TaylorMade-Adidas Golf.

Also in attendance were NBA Commissioner David Stern, tennis legends (and shoe franchise namesakes) Rod Laver and Stan Smith, and L.A. Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez, as well as Foot Locker CEO Ken Hicks and Modell’s CEO Mitch Modell.
