Movie Madness
Steve Madden might be known for his shoe business expertise, but the designer is also an avid movie buff, especially when it comes to behind-the-scenes Hollywood history. "When I was a little boy, I used to read about [movie] moguls," Madden told Spy. "Irving Thalberg fascinated me, and I'm still interested [in the story] today. [Thalberg] went to work for his uncle, the owner of Universal Studios, in 1919 when he was about 21, and then he was stolen by Louis B. Mayer [of MGM], the mogul of moguls. He became a great movie producer, and they called him the boy genius. This was before talking pictures. It's a legend." So what's at the heart of Madden's infatuation with the annals of film? "I am interested in the intersection of art and commerce because, frankly, I've been on both sides," the designer said.
Full Circle
Jim Weber was all sports talk at the FN Achievement Awards last week. The Brooks Sports chief and former amateur hockey player said he hoped the professional NHL players would resolve their lockout dispute for the 2012 season. But until then, he is focused on running, of course. Weber and his FNAA presenter, ultramarathoner Scott Jurek, took to the Central Park reservoir last week. So how many times did the long-distance runners circle the 1.5-mile loop? Weber smiled and would only confirm “Scott owned it.”
On Camera
Spotted: Sam Edelman talking footwear trends on Extra last week. The trends he breaks down? Riding boots, baroque styles, wedges and block heels.
