Carmelo Anthony is bringing a touch of luxury to the basketball court.
The NBA star, a forward for the New York Knicks, told Footwear News he drew inspiration from his own collection of high-end watches for the latest shoe in his signature Jordan Brand line: the Melo M9.
“I love the movement inside tourbillon watches,” Anthony said. “It’s just beautiful, so I wanted to incorporate that into the design of the shoe.”
Taking design cues from tourbillon mechanics, the M9 features ribbon-like cables in the upper, which are part of a newly developed “dynamic fit system” by the Jordan Brand.
Although they hit retail on Jan. 9, the sneakers will be seen on the hardwood for the first time next week, when Anthony debuts them on Christmas Day during the Knicks' matinée game against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Here, the hoops star talks about his luxury timepieces and secret talents.
Earliest basketball memory: “Watching the 1992 Dream Team changed my mindset about the game. I really started loving and enjoying basketball after that.”
I’m addicted to: Tourbillon watches. “My watch game is mean — just look at my Instagram.”
Hidden talent: “I like to draw.”
Favorite pair of sneakers: “I’ve got boatloads of shoes, but I’d have to say the Air Jordan IX.”
Perfect getaway spot: Koh Samui, Thailand. “I went this summer and it was a good time.”
