Trade Show Planner: 1H 2014 Calendar

Below is a look at key events.

It’s a season of change on the trade show circuit. A number of events are overhauling their concepts and shifting dates to keep an edge on the competition and better serve the needs of the industry. Organizers also are stepping up their digital efforts with new online and mobile platforms designed to enhance the show experience and foster connections between exhibitors and buyers.

Here, Footwear News presents a guide to the domestic and international events slated for the first six months of the year.

Running in conjunction with L.A. Fashion Market, Transit will showcase more than 100 footwear and accessories collections, among them Steve Madden, Splendid, Frye and Chinese Laundry. Transit will introduce a series of trend and blogger lounges, mixers and seminars designed to highlight footwear brands exclusive to the West Coast.

Capsule hosts six shows each season in Berlin, Paris, New York and Las Vegas. The New York women’s event will feature an Etsy wholesale marketplace.

Bread & Butter

Jan. 14-16 Airport-Berlin Tempelhof, Berlin
Roughly 115 footwear brands will exhibit at Bread & Butter’s upcoming January show, titled “Ich Bin Ein Berliner [I am a Berliner].” The German show will shake things up in July, debuting a new format that will extend the event to five days, with the first day reserved solely for the press; the second and third devoted to professional visitors; and the last two days open to the public.

Project this season will introduce Ten of Tomorrow, a special showcase of 10 of the most innovative new brands. The New York show will feature the second edition of Project Sole NYC, focused exclusively on men’s footwear. Roughly 50 brands will exhibit, alongside Project’s apparel offerings.

Feb. 17-19 Sands Expo & Convention Center, Las Vegas
Agenda’s two-day New York event brings together the top men’s brands in the street, skate, sneaker and California lifestyle categories. The Las Vegas show will be staged as part of Modern Assembly, a gathering of 2,500 clothing and accessories vendors.

Outdoor Retailer

Jan. 22-25 Salt Palace Convention Center, Salt Lake City
OR will debut Discover New @ OR, a digital product platform showcase located within the New Product Zone that will highlight a selection of brand product images in an interactive format. The popular Outdoor University seminar program will cover topics including “Digital Technology: Friend or Foe to the Outdoor Industry” and “Seamless Multichannel Retailing.” The trade show will host an opening-night industry party, featuring a performance by 1980s cover band Flashback Heart Attack.

FFANY in January will launch its E-Learning program, a series of online shoemaking courses held in partnership with Milan’s Ars Sutoria school. In addition, the show will roll out FFANY 365, an online wholesale marketplace connecting vendors and buyers.

Advanstar’s Magic Market Week encompasses shows including FN Platform, WWDMagic, Project, ENK Vegas Women’s, Project Men’s, WSA @ Magic and Sourcing at Magic. To connect with brands before, during and after the event, attendees can utilize Magic’s interactive digital showroom platform, Shop the Floor, which is now operational year-round.

Feb. 18-20 Las Vegas Convention Center, South Hall, Las Vegas
FN Platform, now in its fifth year, will welcome a number of new exhibitors, among them Catherine Malandrino, Wolverine, Zooligans, Lucchese and Von Dutch. The show’s opening-night party will feature a live performance by 1970s soul group The Commodores. In partnership with Portland, Ore.-based footwear design school Pensole, FN Platform will showcase a design competition in which students create product for brands including Skechers and Steve Madden.

The Micam will once again collaborate with Rolling Stone on several music-themed events, including a showcase of iconic rock ’n’ roll footwear looks and a competition for up-and-coming designers. The show also plans to partner with several international fashion schools to highlight student work in a series of runway shows and exhibits. During a special presentation on the evening of March 3, organizers will unveil Micam’s new format and positioning, which will roll out for the spring ’15 market beginning on Aug. 31.
