Though her designs are far from plain, Sophie Theallet keeps her personal style simple.

“I always dress in black. That way I can focus on designing a new outfit every day,” said Theallet. “I need to be free about what I’m wearing, so I have a blank canvas for designing.”

To showcase her design style, Theallet has teamed with Nine West as part of its Shoelaboration program, creating a collection of flats and espadrille sandals inspired by her love for Paris and New York. The shoes, which launched earlier this month, retail for $79 to $109 at Nine West stores.

Now the designer, who was raised in France and attended fashion school in Paris, is working on the resort collection for her namesake line, while pursuing additional collaborations, which are still under wraps. “I can’t mention them yet,” she said.

Here, Theallet shares her secrets for relaxation, the best getaway spot and her love for Brando.

Favorite city to shop: London. “I love the flea markets and the way people are dressed.”

Best way to relax: “Drinking good wine with friends.”

Biggest design inspiration:
Music. “It brings you to the right place to create.”

Movie to watch on repeat: “A Streetcar Named Desire.” “Marlon Brando in this movie is the absolute male archetype.”

My greatest vacation escape: Biarritz, France. “I love it because that’s where I spent my early days when I was a small child with five brothers. It’s the ultimate chic and elegant getaway.”

Most prized possession: “Antique jewelry from my grandmother.”

Last book I read: “Just Kids” by Patti Smith

Style icons: Romy Schneider, Beatrice Dalle, Rossy de Palma and Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel (at left). “Women with personality.”

If I could travel back in time, I’d go to ...
“The Garden of Eden with Adam before [he and Eve] bit the apple.”
