OR Moves 2013/14 Show Dates

The outdoor trade show will now operate on a Wednesday-to-Saturday schedule.

Outdoor Retailer will shift all its 2013 and 2014 show dates to a Wednesday-through-Saturday schedule, the Nielsen-owned trade show announced today.

The change, which moves both the shows and the All Mountain/Open Air demonstration forward by one day, echoes the previously announced shift in dates for the Winter Market, to Jan. 23-26.

"The change in day pattern for the show is in response to feedback and data showing a growing preference for mid-week travel and trade-show business," Kenji Haroutunian, OR show director and VP of Nielsen Expo Outdoor Group, said in a statement. "Date changes have many moving parts, and we're using this opportunity to better serve our core specialty retail audience, in addition to ensuring crucial exhibitor personnel needs are met in the tight downtown Salt Lake City area." 

Revised dates for the 2013 OR shows are: Winter Market, Jan. 23-26; Summer Market, July 31-Aug. 3.

The 2014 dates are: Winter Market, Jan. 22-25; Summer Market, Aug. 6-9.

The show also is updating and improving its hotel allocation process, run in conjunction with new partner Travel Planners. The change means housing reservations for the summer show will not be available until later this month, the show said.

"We realize that this delay can be frustrating as it's a new process, but we are working closely with Travel Planners to ensure a smoother, better system for the future," Haroutunian said in the statement.

Because of a shortage of accommodations, particularly during the larger summer show, attendees are being housed in locations far from the Salt Palace Convention Center. In response, OR is working on transportation assistance. For the winter ’13 event, it is planning a travel guide to help attendees use Salt Lake’s public transportation and will work to improve shuttle bus service in and around the city.

But those aren’t the only things about OR that are facing changes: Increased attendance from retailers and attendees have prompted the show to explore alternate cities for the 2015 shows and beyond.
