No. 288 aims to make an impression in the men’s market this fall with a twist on leather sneakers.

“Part of our philosophy is to reinvent some classic shoes by applying avant-garde design that is very clean and minimal,” said co-founder Jung Suh. “We love sneakers, and there is a lot of design you can apply to them.”

The New York-based brand, founded by Suh and Benyam Assefa, will debut in fall ’14 with seven styles that will retail for $350 to $500. The looks include a runner, high-top, slip-on and chukka, all of which are made in Portugal.

The fall styles will be offered in No. 288’s foundation colors of black, white, gray and navy, though Suh said more color will be added for spring ’15. Other details include asymmetrical lacing on the trainer and double welting on the high-tops.

So far, stores in France, Japan, South Korea and Russia have signed on to carry the label, which is named for the business partners’ studio address.

The duo also plans to launch e-commerce in the fall.

“We want to deliver downtown New York chic [in shoes],” said Suh.

The label will show at the Man trade show in New York, Paris and Tokyo this summer.
