Paris Shoe of the Day: Dries Van Noten

A worldly spirit translates to heels decorated with touristy embellishment.

At Dries Van Noten, an over-stamped passport was the unseen, yet implied, best accessory — that, and a well-traveled pair of shoes. But these were not utilitarian sightseer sandals. Cowrie shells and kitschy embroidery string, usually reserved for questionable gift shop knickknacks, tricked out wood-soled heels. Paired with Polynesian-print walking shorts (another tourist trap), they proved that under Van Noten's faultless hand, two fashion wrongs can make a right.
