While Chanel showed sneakers today and Valentino sent out 1960s go-go styles, the real shoe surprise took place at Alexander McQueen. Show notes provided clues that this season Sarah Burton was inspired by wild and romantic themes and even "Beauty & the Beast." Amid a tangled moss runway and misty set, a flat laced boot, either in patent, pony or velvet, shone bright with gobsmacking jewels. While the style's lug sole and combat silhouette had punk leanings, its crisp pleated collar and velvet lacing referenced the classic Elizabethan codes Burton often favors. And if the Belle of the ball should ever need to flee, these were indeed fitting boots for making a quick escape — be it down a woodland path or city street.
