Barbie Girl: Pantone’s Barbie Pink was the shade chosen by Christian Louboutin for the classic peep-toe pumps he designed to accompany the fantasy-driven looks in Barbie’s runway production Feb. 14. Due to the demand for these shoes at retail, a limited run of the bubble-gum pink Barbie runway shoes will be available exclusively at the designer’s boutiques. And Christian also is in the process of designing his own Barbie doll, with the proceeds going to a worthy charity. Details are forthcoming on a debut date.
Knocked Off?: New York designers BCBG and Michael Kors showed angled platforms on the runway last week that were oddly reminiscent of London footwear designer Nicholas Kirkwood’s signature slanted platform. Although the designer was tapped again for the eye-catching footwear at Rodarte — thigh high wraparound boots that proved a safer bet than last season’s electrical-cord sandals — he was as surprised as anyone to see that the New York brands’ fall styles resembled his own. But unfazed, Kirkwood told FN he’s already on to other things.
Gem Exhibit: The Natural History Museum — and specifically, the gems and minerals on display there — were a source of inspiration for Vena Cava’s Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock and had the girls excited about working with Via Spiga again for fall ’09. “We get to make really cool shoes that are still comfortable,” the pair said. Along with plans to expand accessories in the future, the duo also hopes to move into housewares, creating more of a lifestyle brand. Project Anonymous: No one knows a thing about the new “Project Runway” designers — and it looks like it’s going to stay that way. The judges and audience at Project Runway’s Bryant Park show had no idea whose designs they were seeing. “It’s an anonymous finale,” said designer judge Michael Kors. “We’ve never done that before. It’s all a secret.” Also a mystery is when and where the sixth season will air. The show is still stuck in the middle of a bitter legal battle between execs at Bravo and Lifetime to see if it will transfer networks.
Pink Heat: During the Matthew Williamson show, shoe designer Camilla Skovgaard watched from the wings as her pink-soled heels made it down the runway. Though Skovgaard has collaborated with Williamson for seven seasons, the thrill of seeing her designs paired with Williamson’s heavily beaded looks hasn’t waned, she said. “It’s great fun to see the total look of outfits and inspiration as I often only work from snippets of information early on,” said Skovgaard.
