Clever updates on classic silhouettes continue to reign for pre-fall footwear, as unique material combinations and menswear references are key trends for the season.
Nobody encompasses subtlety in detailing like Calvin Klein, where a luxe velvet peep-toe platform accompanied pleated-wool separates and a sea of tailored khaki looks. Doo.Ri opted for a one-of-a-kind material for the shoes at her pre-fall presentation, in which abstract printed platform pumps packed a punch with a shiny laminate finish. At Badgley Mischka, simple black ankle boots were made even more sophisticated with suede trim and a stiletto heel, and dressed up everything from silk harem pants to tweed metallic cocktail dresses.
Wedges were particularly prominent in the latest crop of shows. Prime examples were Marcus Wainwright and David Neville’s wearable suede lace-up mid-heel at Rag & Bone and a neutral-colored architectural cutaway version at VPL by Victoria Bartlett.
And the ubiquitous gender-bending footwear trend is taking on extra momentum for pre-fall, with Vera Wang and Thakoon Panichgul both offering up versions. Wang set tasseled loafers on a skinny high heel, adding a bulbous platform for extra support, and paired the style with printed dresses and knee-high socks. Meanwhile, Thakoon took the look down a notch, with nude-colored loafers lacking decoration except for a seamed stitch detail along the top.
