Flip-flops and haute couture are like champagne and sliders: an unlikely high-low pairing, to say the least. Yet at Chanel’s Versailles-meets-Le-Corbusier-themed show this morning, Karl Lagerfeld sent out his cotillion of models in a decidedly dressed-up take on the humble thong sandal. Designed by the house’s footwear director Laurence Dacade, they featured signature chain straps and ribbon ankle wraps to minimize that aurally inelegant slapping sound. With World Cup fever turning all eyes to Rio, was this a hat tip to Havaianas, Brazil’s most famous footwear export?
