The Consumer Product Safety Council recalled 3,200 pairs of Charles David of California women’s shoes sold at Nordstrom.

According to an agency release late Wednesday night, the shoes were recalled because of risks that the heels can detach, posing a hazard to the wearer. The shoes were sold at Nordstrom stores in California and Nordstrom Rack stores nationwide between April 2009 and June 2009.

The recall involved a variety of colors and styles of the Charles by Charles David brand and the Charles David of California brand women’s sample shoes in sizes 7 and 9. The merchandise was sold for between $22 and $80, according to CPSC.

Charles David received one report that a heel had detached, which the CPSC said resulted in minor bruising. Consumers can return the shoes to any Nordstrom or Nordstrom Rack for a full refund.

In a statement released May 29, when the initial customer complaint was received and before the CPSC recall, Charles Malka, owner and CEO of Charles David of California, said there was one incident of a shoe heel falling off a one-of-a-kind production sample the company wholesaled to Nordstrom for a sample sale. Typically shipments of products from the warehouse are inspected and the inclusion of the “handmade, non-production heels” was an oversight, he said. According to Charles David, the total shipment of shoes sent to Nordstrom was 3,200 pairs, but of those shoes, only a small percentage were handmade.

“We are completely shocked and surprised that this has materialized, and we want to amend the problem as soon as possible,” Malka said in the May statement. The statement was sent to Nordstrom and all parties involved, said a spokeswoman for Charles David.
