Fashion-loving film buffs will relish “The September Issue,” the much-anticipated Vogue documentary that debuted at Sundance last Friday. For eight months in 2007, director R.J. Cutler gained intimate access to the world of Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour while she and her team crafted the magazine’s annual September tome. Far from those fictitious depictions of the fashion icon (i.e. “The Devil Wears Prada”), the film captures the unique passion and delicate relationships that make each page of Vogue a reality. Cutler has said it was Wintour’s idea to base the film off the issue’s birthing process, but the director retained final-cut privileges over the 300-plus hours of footage. The result is a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Vogue’s largest issue of all time; the September 2007 book weighed a record-breaking 4 pounds and sold more than 13 million copies.
Outdoor brand Timberland is raising the bar this year as the official footwear and outerwear sponsor of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. In addition to the traditional sponsorship role of providing filmmakers, jurors and other Sundance staffers with new gear (case in point: the special Sundance women’s jacket at right), the eco-centric firm will lead on-site recycling efforts and promote public transportation alternatives. To fuel its green message, Timberland also enlisted activist, author and actress Annabelle Gurwitch to chat up festival goers for the brand’s online Earthkeeper Network. Her interviews about green living will stream on Earthkeeper.com and Timberland.com.
Soles4Souls will be working the room with Puma this year at the athletic brand’s lounge in the Getty Image/Wire Image Portrait Studio. Special guests of the lounge will be invited to sign a giant Puma Clyde (below), which will then be auctioned off to benefit the charitable organization. Puma will also lend a hand by donating pairs of shoes on behalf of its lounge visitors. But Soles4Souls is also hoping to rope in additional star support for its annual Barefoot Week in June. “We are going to Sundance to meet with our celebrity friends and to see who else we can get involved,” said Soles4Souls founder Wayne Elsey. He noted that his spokespeople had meetings lined up with several high-wattage supporters, including Scarlett Johansson.
Looking to blow off some steam after a long day of festival screenings? Ditch the crowds in Park City and Sundance and hang with the locals at Keys on Main, the newest dueling pianos bar in Salt Lake City. Every night, two pianists tickle the ivories with audience requests. But this is no lounge act. “We really will play absolutely anything,” said founder George Kelly. “Last week I did songs from Salt-n-Pepa, Bon Jovi and Journey.” Like all Salt Lake watering holes, Keys is considered a “private club,” meaning that patrons pay a cover charge at the door. But once inside, you’ll be treated to tasty nosh, a full menu of drinks and some of the best entertainment in the Beehive State. Just ask pop star Vanessa Carlton and Olympic speed skater Apollo Anton Ohno — both have made appearances at Keys. The bar is located at 242 S. Main St. There is no dress code, but singing along is required.
